Guidelines for Chapters and Committees Using Different Communications Channels

ACNL chapters and committees work incredibly hard to plan and host their meetings, events, and other initiatives, and it is the responsibility of the ACNL home office to help promote them.

We do this through the following channels:

Email Blasts
Social Media
Print Media

Some of these channels can be further subdivided -- we're active on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram; print media can take the form of 8.5"x11" flyers and/or trifold brochures. Each of these has different needs and requirements.

The purpose of these guidelines is to help chapters and committees know what to provide the ACNL home office in order to promote their activities on these various channels.

Email Blasts

We generally do not include images in our email blasts. There are two main reasons for this.

Many of our members work in hospitals and use their work email for our communications. These organizations often have very aggressive firewalls and other security protocols which prevent images from loading correctly. In some cases, image-heavy emails will simply have the images blocked, and in other cases the entire email will be flagged as spam. We include the ACNL logo and occasionally use images as design elements, but we do not include important information in the images in case they are not able to load for any reason.
Some of our members have vision impairments and rely on screen readers and other accessibility tools to read our emails. These tools are not always able to handle images correctly, and putting important information, such as the time and location of an event, in an image prevents these members from being able to receive that information.

Please note that we are also unable to include attachments of any kind in our emails. For these reasons, we do not include flyers in our emails. If you send the ACNL office a flyer to promote your event, we can use it on our website and social media channels, but all of the information contained on it will be converted to plain text for email usage. If all you are requesting is an email blast, the easiest thing to do is to send the information and we can handle it from there.

Social Media

Social media, on the other hand, is the perfect channel for images! There are still a few recommendations and requirements to follow:

Aspect Ratio : The aspect ratio of an image refers to its width and height -- e.g., a typical printed photograph is 6 inches wide by 4 inches tall, for an aspect ratio of 3:2. Facebook and LinkedIn are aspect ratio agnostic; most image sizes will display correctly on these platforms. However, Instagram requires a 4:5 ratio to display properly on a user's feed, so we defer to this ratio in our posts. This is very close to the same ratio as an 8.5x11" sheet of paper (the standard size for a flyer), but it isn't quite the same, and images at that ratio will get cut off, as in the example below:

QR Codes : B ecause most of our social media posts will be viewed on a phone, we do not typically include QR codes in the images. QR codes are best used in print flyers so that the user can quickly scan the code instead of typing in a web address on their phone. If they are viewing a QR code on their phone, they would need a second phone to scan it, and if they're viewing it on a desktop computer, it is often easier to just provide a link for them to click, so we do this on Facebook and LinkedIn. Links are not allowed on Instagram except in the bio, so we refer users to that link, which leads to a landing page where we can list other links as needed.
Other Information : Again, because most of our social media posts are going to be viewed on a phone, we want to limit the amount of information in the images. The title, time, and location of an event are fine, and you can usually fit one speaker's headshot and name. But if there are, say, four speakers and an agenda, each individual element must be sized smaller, and they become very difficult to see on a small screen, as in the example below:

Print Media

Print media is where we finally get to use the beloved 8.5x11" flyer and its attendant QR code. The format is easy to print, easy to read, and QR codes are extremely helpful here so that users don't have to type long web addresses into their phones. It is a great format for booths and tables at in-person events, as well as bulletin boards, front desks, and so on.

From time to time we get requests for trifold brochures. Please note that these are formatted for a different size of paper, and because of the way they're folded, they need to be printed edge-to-edge, which home and office printers are not capable of. If you need a trifold brochure, there is an additional cost, as we need to go through a specialized printing company that we work with.

Another format we occasionally get requests for is the 8.5x11" brochure. While individual pages are easy to print, this is another format that needs to go through our printing company. Each page is actually 17"x11" folded in half and stapled in the middle. This also means that any brochure in this format needs to have a page count in multiples of four, as seen below:

Maintaining Board Directory Pages

Keep your board pages up to date with automatic features

Starting March 2025, ACNL and its chapters began using a dynamic system for maintaining board directories. This approach was meant to alleviate the team and staff from manually updating the website when board roles changed. Content in the board directories is sorted by role authority and divided into three groups: Executive, Chapter and Regional/Academia. This methods accommodates that requirement.

Principles of the Directory Display Approach via Membership Works

Membership works allows categorization of member records using folders and labels. These folders and labels are utilized in displaying the information in the required way.

Thus, board members are identified as individuals whose member record has been copied to the ACNL Boards folder, with the selected board label(s) of either "Board - Executive, - Chapter, - Regional, - Academia. A region label (Region - North, Central, South, San Diego) is important for Regional Board Members. A chapter label (e.g. Chapter - Greater San Francisco) should be chose so that they appear on the correct chapter page for chapter directories. These selections are made in Membership Works:

Choosing the Directory Display Values in Membership Works Profiles

Once the folder and labels have been properly selected for board members, you must choose what titles display for them and in what order. There are titles and sort orders for executive and chapter boards as well as regional and academic boards. Do this by selecting the options from dropdowns in the users profile.

Of course, to remove a person from being displayed in the board directory, removing them from the ACNL Boards folder is fastest. Remember to make sure that record is just a copy and not their only membership record before removal. Otherwise, you will be deleting a member completely from Membership Works. You will also what to reset the title display values on the user's profile along with deselecting any labels that no longer apply.

In Summary

This process of simply putting a member in a folder and selecting a few labels is easier that going to each individual website to upload images, reproduce profile information and format photos and text for a page. You only need to work in Membership Works.

So, remember to follow these steps to have a board member display automatically in a proper directory:

a - The staff or user adding an image to their business card on their profile

b - Select their appropriate role labels (Board - Chapter, Board - Executive, Board - Regional, Board - Academia)

c - Copy their record to the ACNL Boards Membership Works folder if they are not there

d - Select their Region label

e - Finally, on the ACNL tab/box for their profile, choose the display title and sort order from the drop down lists.

The statewide ACNL office collaborates with many partners, including sponsors, exhibitors, other nursing and healthcare organizations, ACNL committees and chapters, and more.

Mission, Vision, Values

ACNL's mission, vision, and values are the foundation of everything we do, and that includes our branding guidelines. Please visit our about page to learn more.

Brand Voice

Two of our core values are Diversity and Inclusivity, and this is reflected in our brand voice.

Our audience is diverse. Our members serve in many different areas of care; they are at many different stages of their careers; they come from different ethnic, racial, and generational backgrounds; they represent different genders and sexualities.

Beyond our membership, ACNL is a public-facing organization. Our audiences often include other members of the healthcare industry, patients, legislators, and members of the general public.

With this in mind, we strive to be inclusive with our brand voice. Word choice should be simple and easy to understand for all audiences. Members of the public may not know certain jargon terms or acronyms that are common in healthcare settings, and even our nursing audiences may use these terms differently depending on the setting. It is important to use colloquial language in our communications and to spell out acronyms on their first usage.

Our other two core values are Integrity and Innovation. We are a professional association, and our members are in leadership positions, so we must act and speak with integrity, maintain a respectful tone, and uphold the trust placed in the nursing profession.

But we also have fun at ACNL! Following our core value of Innovation means finding new ways to reach new audiences, exploring new channels for communication, and being open to new ideas. This has led us to growing our audience through more casual formats like Instagram and podcasting.

ACNL's logo files can be found on this page, along with guidance for their usage. These logos are to be used for official purposes and by authorized individuals only. If you would like to use our logos, please obtain permission from the ACNL office beforehand. Authorized individuals may resize the logos as needed, but any other alternations must be approved by the ACNL office first.

Clearspace

When using the ACNL logo, make sure to allow space on all sides. The clearspace around the logo can be determined by utilizing the width of the apricot stripe.

Logo On Image

When using the logo on an image, avoid placing the logo in areas with too much visual clutter. Place the logo in an area with open space and minimal color variation and texture.

Resizing the Logo

From time to time it may be necessary to resize the logo to fit or fill a certain space or to align it with or match the size of other elements. When doing so, always make sure to scale the logo correctly. Never stretch the logo in one direction or another for any reason.

The primary purpose of the ACNL Nursing Research & EBP Committee is to support, encourage, and facilitate California nurse leader participation in research and evidence-based leadership activities. The Nursing Research & EBP Committee functions under the ACNL strategic focus to prepare nurses to transform self, others and systems.

Research Development – Contributes to new knowledge by participating in and/or providing consultation in the design, implementation, analysis, and publication of nursing leadership research that aligns with and supports the mission and goals of ACNL.

Research Utilization – Supports efforts to identify and integrate research findings that are sufficient and appropriate to apply to nursing leadership development/practice and professional organization success

Research Education – Develops educational programs on the generation and utilization of research and evidence-based leadership practice

Research Dissemination – Provides structures and processes for the dissemination of nursing research and other levels of evidence

Application to Conduct Research with ACNL

ACNL supports nursing research and scholarly activities (e.g. evidence-based practice or performance improvement projects). ACNL will provide access to the membership database for identifying potential participants for research studies or other scholarly endeavors for qualifying projects.

ACNL is taking a step into the future with its new virtual finance course. Join instructor and ACNL President-Elect Jeffery Hudson-Covolo, to learn how to create budgets, calculate expenses, and more.

The course is conducted through Zoom, ensuring a seamless and interactive learning experience. Upon registration, participants will receive an email providing detailed instructions on how to access the course materials and join the sessions.

Our health care environment is changing rapidly. Health care reform, pay for performance, HCAHPS, value-based purchasing, quality, patient safety and other critical initiatives are vital to the success of your healthcare organization and your ability to provide optimal patient care.

Foundation for Leadership Excellence is a five-day intensive program to help you develop long-lasting, effective leadership skills. Whether its human resource issues, customer-service concerns, implementation of quality and patient safety initiatives, budget analysis, cost-saving mandates or building your influence as a leader, you will gain new perspectives and solutions for the difficult challenges you face on a daily basis.

Course Objectives Include:

Explore innovations in nursing practice and leadership.
Identify and grow your personal leadership style to increase your influence and effectiveness.
Develop strategies to build a positive work environment with motivated employees where optimal inter-professional practice flourishes.
Examine proven approaches to enhance customer service and patient engagement to increase HCAHPS and CGCAHPS scores.
Utilize business plans and financial reports to drive decision-making.
Integrate performance-improvement, regulatory and accrediting principles into your leadership role.
Discover the nurse leader’s role in health care reform and the institute of Medicine’s Future of Nursing vision.
Discuss implications of policy decisions on nursing practice and patient care.
Develop proficiency in providing meaningful feedback to employees.
Devise strategies to effectively lead and manage change.
Re-energize your spirit to be the best leader possible.

ACNL Membership Types

ACNL offers several types of membership: Regular, Emeritus, Affiliate, and Lifetime.

ACNL Regular Membership

Regular Member is defined as registered nurses who function in leadership roles that optimize wellness.
A registered nurse who:

has responsibility for management and/or leadership of the patient care process, or
manages financial resources in healthcare, or
manages and directs appropriate allocation and utilization of human resources in healthcare, or
provides education and/or consultation to healthcare providers or consumers of healthcare, or
provides healthcare in an advanced and/or independent practice role, or
designs, conducts or evaluates research in healthcare, or
publishes, edits or authors for a healthcare publication, or
provides leadership in regulatory and other nursing and healthcare organizations, or
is past president of the corporation regardless of current work position.

Regular Members have full voting privileges
Annual Membership: $225

Emeritus Membership

Emeritus Membership is an active ACNL member for 5 years or more, age 62 or older, working less than 25% time.

Emeritus Members have full voting privileges
Annual Membership: $120

ACNL Affiliate Membership

Affiliate Member is an individual who is not a registered nurse, but has a direct communication or connection with nurse leaders on a regular basis and who either contributes to the profession of nursing or who serves the profession in a support role (Formerly Professional Colleague).

Nursing students may join under the Affiliate Member category to receive a student discount. Please contact the ACNL office for more information.

Affiliate members have no voting privileges.
Annual Membership: $180

ACNL Lifetime Membership

Lifetime membership is available to ACNL members who are 65 and over and have been ACNL members for at least 10 consecutive years. In order to obtain Lifetime Membership, please contact the ACNL office.

Lifetime members have full voting privileges.
Lifetime Membership: $1,200

Scholarships for Nurses

ACNL offers various scholarships to support nurses and nursing students in pursuing higher education, advancing nursing knowledge, and completing pre-licensure requirements. These scholarships are awarded at ACNL’s Annual Conference in February. See below for more details and application links.

Medical Surgical Nursing Consortium - Med/Surg Certification Scholarships

The Med Surg conference was started by a group of nurse educators who wanted to unite the community around excellence in nursing care. The Medical Surgical Consortium wants to give back and continue to help mold the future of nursing for years to come. We seek nurses who are innovators and leaders. We want to inspire nurses to keep foundational principles of med surg nursing in the forefront of their practice.

ACNL Scholarships

ACNL awards scholarships to support registered nurse in expanding their leadership acumen through advanced study, pursuing higher degrees to meet community or organizational needs, and advancing nursing knowledge through research conduct and dissemination. ACNL membership IS required to apply.

Eligibility:

Be a member of ACNL
Be a Registered Nurse (RN) with proof
Be an RN enrolled at least halftime in a course of study (RN to BSN, MSN, MBA, MPH, DNSc, DNP, PhD)
Previous ACNL scholarship recipients are not eligible

Application Requirements:

A copy of active RN license (any state)
School transcripts with evidence of cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher or PASS grade in a competency based academic system.
A personal statement (not to exceed 500 words) Must address applicant's unique contribution to the profession in the process of pursuing a higher degree including the need for financial assistance. Statements may include examples of volunteer or community involvement, certifications, or other examples of excellence.
Two letters of recommendation, one from a supervisor and another from a professor from school. The letters must address the following qualities of the applicant: Vision, collaboration, risk taking, entrepreneurial spirit, and leadership ability.

Deadline: August 31, 2026

Pre-licensure Scholarships for Student Nurses

ACNL provides scholarships to support graduating student nurses in completing their pre-licensure requirements. Scholarships are awarded to student nurses who have graduated from an accredited program and are in the process of applying for the NCLEX exam.

Selection is determined through a committee process and is based upon the applicant meeting eligibility criteria, completion of the application documents, and available funds.

Eligibility:

Successfully graduated from an accredited nursing program
Proof of completing graduation requirements or Authorization to Test (ATT)
Demonstrate financial need

Application Requirements:

Proof of completing graduation requirements or Authorization to Test (ATT)
Personal statement (not to exceed 500 words)
Recommendation form completed by a professor

Nurses' Float Scholarship

The Nurses’ Float Scholarship Fund, administered by ACNL, was created from the funds remaining after the Nurses’ Float appeared in the 2013 Rose Parade. This academic scholarship supports registered nurses pursuing either an ADN to BSN or BSN to MSN degree. New this year we are offering a scholarship for students in an ADN program.
